We seek to understand the mechanisms that drive biomolecular function and uncover the fundamental principles of life.
Our laboratory studies biomolecules that form the basis of biological processes, with a particular focus on membrane proteins, including ion channels, receptors, and transporters. These molecules not only support fundamental functions such as the electrical activity of the heart and brain, but also act as molecular sensors that detect changes in the extracellular environment and convert them into intracellular signals. They also play essential roles in maintaining the homeostasis of body fluids.
Understanding how membrane proteins operate within the unique environment of the cell membrane requires interdisciplinary approaches that extend beyond conventional medical physiology. We integrate a broad range of techniques, including electrophysiology, fluorescence spectroscopy, protein science, structural biology, and computational science.
Our goal is to address broad questions in life science and medicine from a molecular and physicochemical perspective and to advance new directions in molecular physiology.
(Prof. Fujiwara)
